This week Bungie-Sony announced that after the June 9th update, this will be the last content update and Destiny 2 will be retired. The servers will be kept alive like they have for Destiny 1, but it's still game over man, game over.
The farewell message gave hints that the universe isn't dying, suggesting future content, but too many follow-up articles have come out by the media with word from insiders that this shutdown has come to a surprise to the studio, from Sony, and there are currently no development efforts nor any greenlit plans.
Sony is clearly without faith. Yes they overpaid when they acquired Bungie and Pete the cars-CEO swindled them brilliantly for his own personal gains, but if they ever expect to recoup that money, cancelling Destiny is NOT going to do that. Pushing Marathon forward to the front won't do that either. A Destiny 3 is the only way.
The community is hurting and in mourning, myself included. I have about 4,000 hours invested in the franchise; thousands of dollars, and it's been my main game to play daily for 12 year run. It feels like another marriage has ended, or someone shot my dog. It's not just a threatened loss of entertainment and hobby, but of identity, belonging, and family with my fellow Guardians. I've raided, got lost in builds, I've played with Bungie employees, memorized so much lore, have walked every inch of maps, and fought for the Light, and puppies. I was there, Gandalf.
The community plans on showing up for the new content on June 9th en masse, and send a message to Sony. We want our numberes to reveal the size and passion of the community in hopes of sending active users charts through the roof and get Sony to notice that Marathon is not their cash cow, but that Destiny still is. They only need to commit to it and we will answer in kind.
See you starside,
